Plants have elaborate response systems to nutritional condition to optimize their growth at whole-body level (plant optimal behavior). As an example, plants adjust growth balance of shoot and root to nitrogen supply in which they germinated. Due to the fact that most of life on Earth depends on assimilation production (food production) of plants, elucidating the mechanisms of "plant optimal behavior" is one of the central issues of agriculture and life science. This research unit aims to elucidate molecular mechanisms underlying optimized plant behavior in response to nitrogen availability specially focusing on a role of signaling molecules. This unit starts as a small group, but we will expand collaborative network to build a center of excellence in plant optimal behavior research. Our research results would be applied to molecular bleeding toward low-input/stable output agriculture.
