In contrast to higher eukaryotes, yeast produces a unique actin molecule encoded by a single gene [1],[2],[3]. The sequence is highly conserved not only between yeast species but in comparison to other known sequences. The S.carlsbergensis actin gene sequence appears in another entry. The S.cerevisiae and the S.carlsbergensis sequences differ at only three sites in the intron and at one in the 3' flank. The intron is at the same location. No other eukaryotic actin gene studied so far has an intron in the same location. [4] argues that the two strains of S.cerevisiae, A364A and 2180-1A, are probably identical and that the differences between [3] and [4] are experimental.
